The Internet has provided us with countless of advantages, and one of these is attaining education through online programs like EMT training. Online EMT courses are available for students who want to become emergency medical technicians. The program covers the instructional part of the course regardless of the level of EMT jobs – basic, intermediate or paramedic – sought for. The good thing about taking the course online is that the student learns at the comfort of his/her own home and according to his own pace. Moreover, the simulation part of the class can be scheduled and worked around the student’s availability.
Students who wish to enroll in an online EMT training class must see to it that the instruction meets the standards set by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. This is a US certification agency for prehospital medical providers. The agency establishes and standardizes training requirements for EMTs.
Generally, an online EMT training program provides lessons on human anatomy, medical terminology, physiology, and general pharmacology. Learning materials are acquired via the web either in HTML format, graphics, or podcasts. Video clips mostly cover instructions on life-saving skills and responding to emergency situations. The clips will also teach students on how to lift and move patients, take vital signs, handle airway obstructions, perform CPR, set fractures, and stop bleeding.
The online program only covers the instructional part. The clinical part is also required, and this can be arranged to fit the student’s schedule. The clinical portion of the program involves hands-on training like responding to actual emergency situation and riding along in an ambulance.
Once the entire EMT training is completed, the students must take and pass a written examination that will duly certify them as professional EMTs. Average EMT salary is estimated to be at $25,000 to $45,000 annually. The income is said to be higher when working in big cities or highly urbanized communities.
